Just outside of Cairo, in the suberb of Giza, stands the amazing pyramids. The Great Pyramid of Khufu which is the largest in Egypt, was completed around 2570 BC. It originally stood 146 meters high and after 46 centuries has been reduced by only 9 meters. About 2.3 million limestone blocks, weighing an average of 2 1/2 tons each were used in the construction.
No photography was allowed inside the Great Pyramid, but climbing down the narrow shaft was quite the experience.
Carved from the natural bedrock at the bottom of the causeway to Khafre's pyramid, stands the Sphinx. Click here for a historical account of this incredible monument.
