After an overnight train ride from Cairo, we arrived in Aswan, our most southern point. In the afternoon we visited Elephantine Island then took an hour camel ride past St. Simeon's Monastery then onto a Nubian village for a wonderful meal in a local family's house. We sailed for 2 days up the Nile in a felucca, a single mast, lateen rigged sailing boat. Our Nubian crew provided the meals while we sat back and watched life along the river. At night we camped out under the stars and during the day we made a stop to visit the town of Daraw, famous for a weekly camel market. On our second day, where we stopped for the night, I picked fresh bananas, although I had to keep them a week before they were ripe enough to eat.
